Artist Statement
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I am an artist and a working cowgirl. I have owned and worked with horses my entire life. I know and love my subject matter....every day I am aware of how horses move, act, and how their footwork and legs are influenced by their gaits. I know how their tack should look and fit. Ranch life is just a part of what I do every day.
My inspiration comes from the land I'm surrounded by....Historical ranches, working ranches, and the Native American land where the Apaches and Navajos once lived. Just stepping outside the door of our ranch, I am hit by that special ambient light that Arizona boasts of; the color of the rocks, dirt, sky and the mountains. This all has made an indelible impression on the way I paint.
My vision is to present to viewers, historical spots in Arizona where I reside, and other places in the western United States, by creating paintings using these backdrops of our engaging and beautiful history of the west. I visit sites of historical significance and compose my paintings. Every rock and every nuance is actually there, if the viewer cares to visit the site. If not, they have a piece of history placed on their walls, where our western roots came from....a memory of those events of time.
I use the Acrylic and Oil mediums as my vehicles of choice, they say whatever I need to, and they suit the artistic way I have of expressing myself.
I've spent many years of tackling portrait commissions and an interesting face always gets my blood flowing....
Most years I enter western art shows to get my name around, and I'm delighted when I'm able to hang. I earned my signature award, S.W.A., from the Society of Western Artists in 1987, and have received enough awards and recognition to make life exciting and to keep my focus intact.
I currently create my paintings in my studio in South eastern Arizona. I get my raw material from riding on ranches, 4-wheeling around Arizona with my husband, or visiting the Navajo Nation, with a camera around my neck, recording scenes that are there for an instant in time...
I also enjoy teaching art when time permits.
